Walk This Way!

Wyndham City is encouraging residents who walk throughout the municipality to help shine a spotlight on the safety issues related to their favourite walking spots.

The information will then be used to prepare a report on the issues that concern people while walking around their neighbourhoods.

Wyndham City has joined forces with the WalkSpot Project, a collaboration between Victoria Walks and CrowdSpot.

The six week project aims to find out what areas throughout Melbourne people think are safe or unsafe to go for a walk.

To take part residents can visit the WalkSpot map at walkspot.crowdspot.com.au where they can add a new walking spot, comment on an existing spot or vote on the safety of an existing spot.

Wyndham City’s Safer Communities Portfolio Holder, Cr Kim McAliney, encouraged people to take part in the project.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Wyndham residents to identify not only the negative but also the positive aspects about being out and about walking in their community,” Cr McAliney said.

“The data that is collected through this project will be used to prepare a report on the issues that concern people while walking around their neighbourhoods. This will help Victoria Walks better understand and target advocacy for street improvements in the future, while the data will also be provided to all of the participating Councils and VicRoads to help them prioritise future projects.”

“Wyndham City is passionate about working collaboratively with other Councils, Victoria Walks and the State Government to help us to better understand the community’s walking needs, as well as what would encourage them to walk more.”

A spokesperson for Victoria Walks added: “We need to get more people active and WalkSpot provides a unique opportunity to understand the types of issues people face walking in Melbourne.”

Be sure to add your comments before the WalkSpot project closes on Friday 28 April. For more information, visit www.walkspot.org.au.
